Introduction to Distributed Morphology

LECTURER: ANDREW MURPHY
August 12-16, 14.00-15.30, Room 3.101

This class will provide an introduction to the fundamental assumptions of Distributed Morphology.
Starting from the foundational ideas found in Halle & Marantz (1993), the class aims to provide a comprehensive review of the most important arguments in support of DM. It will also touch on some ongoing controversies in current DM literature, including the locality conditions on allomorphy/allosemy, cross-linguistic restrictions on syncretism and the assumption of morphology-specific operations.

Preliminary syllabus:

Class 1: The fundamentals of DM

Class 2: Building words

Class 3: Morphotactics

Class 4: Allomorphy

Class 5: Syncretism
