Mismatches between phonology and other parts of grammar

LECTURER: CAROLINE FÉRY

In this class, we will explore different kinds of mismatches between phonology and other parts of grammar, such as morphosyntax and semantics. We will reveal that mismatches are frequent at all levels of prosodic hierarchy: syllable, foot, prosodic word, prosodic phrase and intonation phrase. Stress patterns and tonal structure will also be addressed. We will use different languages to illustrate the importance of understanding phonology and prosodic structure to explain these mismatches (as opposed to denying the existence of prosodic constituents): phonological properties of German, Greek, Mandarin Chinese, English and French will be compared to explain why mismatches are so frequent and why they take different forms in different languages.
